Charlotte Mensah Afro hairdresser of the Year 2013

I was brought up by my grandparents from the age of three months in Accra, Ghana. They taught me the value of hard work, self-belief and having unwavering faith.

I set up L.O.V.E charity to put underprivileged young people through vocational training, i.e. hairdressing, carpentry and dressmaking. L.O.V.E  is named after my late mother, whose name was LOVE, and it stands for Ladies Of Visionary Empowerment. Whilst I was teaching in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, for L.O.V.E, one of the students didn’t have the bus fare to get to the workshop and she walked for 4 hours to get to my class. I was saddened but at the same time inspired by her drive and determination that she overcame a number of boundaries.

Healthy, great looking hair is the goal. I try and avoid harsh chemicals, excessive heat, chlorine and sun as these can cause dryness. Shampooing, conditioning treatments and regular trims are the building blocks for managing my hair.I use my own hair mixture ,”The Charlotte Mensah hair mixture’ is rich in Vitamin E, which helps repair dry and damaged hair. My mixtureis an organic range of natural formulations, containing ethical, sustainable and organic ingredients fromPhytotrade Africa. They are free from Sulphates, Parabens and Petrochemicals; reconditioning the hair making it feel its natural best.

I like my skin to be healthy at every age, I don’t smoke so this helps my skin stay radiant and healthy. I drink at least 2 litres of water to hydrate my skin and flush out impurities. As a skin freak, I tend to mix my own products from the highest grade of ethically sourced raw materials. This ensures I have the most effective and luxurious moisturiser for my face and body. Plus, I wear very little makeup but I do use Dior Mascara and YSL eyeliner.

I focus on having healthy stomach filling food that I make myself from scratch. I also fast once a month cutting out all sugars and carbs. I’m not a member of a gym but I do walk to and from work everyday. I stay focused on what I need to get done.

For that me time I take 10 minutes everyday to pray and develop a deep relationship with God to help me create wellness, balance and serenity.

Beauty is the light that shines through me as me I make the most of the physical gift that God has given me. I feel at home with myself and my world.
